The Spring Cottage

The Spring Cottage, Elmore Green Road, 12 August 2007 (Stuart Williams)

  • The present building was built in Elmore Green Road about 1901.
  • The licensee of the earlier pub of the same name in 1881 (shown below) was Michael Canaan, a miner from Shropshire.
  • An interesting feature of this pub used to be the two engraved glass windows, which had an old 2-2-2 steam locomotive on them with the words 'Trade Mark', signifying its one time ownership by Roberts’ Station Brewery, owned by William Roberts, a prominent Brownhills citizen and businessman, who also owned the Spotted Cow near the Turf Tavern.  Now sadly removed.
  • Strange noises have apparently been heard in this pub at night and some of the regulars believe it to be haunted.  Probably another kind of spirit is the cause of this, however!
  • A survey in the 1920's showed it to have a Bar, small outdoor and Smoke Room with a stable at the back, the trade at the time was about two barrels a week.
  • Slight alterations were made in 1928, and in 1948 the pub was enlarged to take in 60a Elmore Green Road. The licensee at that time was Benjamin Haydock.
