Shock closure of another High Street pub

The George:  closed but hopefully not forever.  Picture:  Stuart Williams.

Dateline:  27 May 2009

What is happening to our pubs in Bloxwich?  The latest to go under this week is The George, on the corner of High Street and Elmore Row, which was open at the weekend but is now shuttered with ghastly metal panels like fellow High Street watering hole The Prince of Wales and the nearby Bull's Head (Park Road).

Last August the Sir Robert Peel in Bell Lane and the Spring Cottage on Elmore Green Road closed, joining the ranks of disappearing Bloxwich inns including The Bridgewater (Lower Farm, demolished!), The Bull's Head, The Prince of Wales, The Station Hotel (Station Street) and The Spotted Cow (Wolverhampton Road).

Since then the Sir Robert Peel, the Spring Cottage, The Station Hotel, The Spotted Cow and The Prince of Wales have all thankfully re-opened, though the Prince of Wales lasted only a few short weeks before closing again.

All we can say is this:  if you value these traditional social centres, then use them.  Otherwise you may lose them in the current economic circumstances.  Historic pubs, of which Bloxwich once had more than any other part of the borough, are an important part of the life of our town.  Please support your local.  Don't let them all disappear - why not drop in for a pint today?
