Goodrich 2 Bloxwich United AFC 5

Report by Andrew Poole and photo courtesy of Bloxwich Utd AFC

Dateline:  20 April 2009

BLOXWICH United AFC ran out comfortable 5-2 winners at Goodrich.

The Red Lions opened the scoring on 18 minutes when some intelligent play by Karl Edwards saw him feed Craig Bannister who lashed home with his left foot.

The home side managed to get back on level terms when they picked up a loose ball in midfield to score on the break.

With the half-time interval approaching, Edwards was played through and he made no mistake as he closed in on goal to make it 2-1 to Bloxwich.

The early action of the second period saw substitute, Leon Taylor make an instant impact as he fired home for 3-1.

The lead was further extended when Bannister volleyed home from distance with around 20 minutes left on the clock.

A teasing cross from former Goodrich man, Adam Simkiss was met by the head of Edwards to make it 5-1 before the hosts pulled back a consolation goal towards the end. "We never really got out of first gear," said manager, Michael Moseley. "We have four League games to go and need to be firing on all cylinders and fully focussed in order to finish as high as we can."

Bloxwich United Reach Final of JW Hunt Cup

Report by Andrew Poole and photo courtesy of Bloxwich Utd AFC

Dateline:  17 April 2008

BLOXWICH United AFC reached the Final of the JW Hunt Cup following a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Cradley Town in the Semi-Final on Thursday.

The early action saw Bloxwich’s leading scorer, Craig Bannister snatch at a couple of chances before seeing a header from a deep Adam Simkiss cross well saved.

The opening goal arrived on the quarter-hour mark when Nick Smith curled home from distance to give Tim Beech in the Cradley goal no chance.

John Freeman tried his luck on the greasy surface soon afterwards with a low drive that Beech gathered at the second attempt.

The Cradley front-men were being well marshalled by the Bloxwich defence with captain Mitchell Tolley in commanding form and fellow central defender, Garry Barton a constant vocal presence.

Their resistance was finally broken on 32 minutes when a neat move ended with Carl Martin firing powerfully home from distance.

Bloxwich attempted an instant response as Bannister was denied in front of goal by a smart block from the ‘keeper, whilst at the other end, Tony Simkiss did well to deny Ryan Rowe.

The second period started with Rowe, a regular on the scoresheet for Cradley this term, going close.

An intelligent ball from Jarrad Stevens played in Bannister who fired wide from a good position.

It was a cagey affair with both sides cancelling each other out as Levi Bailey fired over for Cradley before Johnny Walker had to be alert to clear at the near post as the Midland Alliance outfit looked to up the pressure.

The introduction of Alan Wilkes breathed new life into Bloxwich and his first involvement in the action brought a save from Beech. The former Walsall youth teamer then went on to grab the winner with just seven minutes to go when his effort from the left side of the area found its way beyond Beech and crept over the line.

With Cradley pushing up right at the death, a breakaway by Stevens saw him denied by the ‘keeper who moments earlier had come up for a corner only to fire over.

“The lads worked extremely hard,” said triumphant manager, Michael Moseley. “We were the better team and deserved to go through.

“There were some tired legs out there after a tough game on Tuesday, but the work ethic was superb.

“I am delighted for everyone involved; a lot of hard work has gone into getting us this far.”

The Red Lions will now take on AFC Wulfrunians in the Final, which is to be played at Molineux in May.

Dudley Town 4 - Bloxwich United AFC 3

Report by Andrew Poole and photo courtesy of Bloxwich Utd AFC

IT WAS a tale of bad luck for Bloxwich United AFC as they slipped to a last-gasp 4-3 defeat at a blustery Dudley Town last Saturday (28 March).

Goalkeeper, Tony Simkiss injured a hamstring in the warm-up and had to be replaced by leading goalscorer, Craig Bannister, whilst Adam Simkiss and Matt Curley were also late withdrawals.

Despite the set-backs, Bloxwich started the game with real purpose as Karl Edwards and Alan Wilkes were both denied by the home 'keeper before Richard Joyce went close to opening the scoring.

The home side took the lead with their first real effort at goal as Craig Ball's free-kick in a dangerous position found its way beyond Bannister.

Early in the second period the scores were level when Leon Taylor found the net but Dudley's reply was instant as former United man, Darren Leonard capitalised upon a defensive mix-up.

It was soon 3-1 as Mensah Kinch fired home beyond a helpless Bannister.

Bloxwich failed to let their heads drop and continued to battle away despite losing key men Nick Smith, Garry Barton and Alan Wilkes through injury. Edwards converted from the penalty spot to give The Red Lions hope and Taylor snatched a late equaliser.

A penalty decision went against Bloxwich right at the death and there was still time for the home side to go down the other end of the field and win it through substitute, Danny Ashton.

"The fighting spirit displayed by my players was superb," said manager, Michael Moseley. "Luck certainly wasn't on our side, but we don't want to make excuses. The lads gave me their all, and that is all I ask.

"We have to stay positive; we have done superbly well this season."

RED LIONS LET LEAD SLIP AT LEDBURY

Report by Andrew Poole and photo courtesy of Bloxwich Utd AFC

THE RED Lions let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at Ledbury Town on Saturday 21st March.

New signing, Karl Edwards opened his scoring account for Bloxwich in the 25th minute when he fired home following a good move.

Strike partner, Craig Bannister added a second eight minutes from the end of the first half.

Bloxwich had further opportunities to extend their lead during the remainder of the opening period, but fell apart after the break as the home side upped the tempo.

Late strikes from Dorian Coolings and Scott Roberts meant that it ended with honours even. "We're lacking bite at the moment," said manager, Michael Moseley. "Our first half performance was good but the confidence drained from us after the break.

"We will remain positive and look to finish as high as we can."

Meanwhile the ongoing progression of the club will continue with the introduction an under-16 youth team for the 2009/10 season.

An Open Trial Day is being held at The Old Red Lion Ground in Somerfield Road, Bloxwich on Saturday, May 2nd where all budding footballers in the under-16 age group (Year 11) are invited to attend.

"We are looking for players in all positions," said coach, Craig Timmins, himself a former Walsall FC youth team player. "All youngsters have to do is turn up with their boots and show us what they can do."

Registration will take place at noon, with the trials taking place between 12.30pm and 3.00pm.

Refreshments will be on sale throughout the day and a Licensed Bar will be open for accompanying adults over the age of 18.

For more information please call Craig on 07598 178 891.

Bloxwich top table with Victory V Ludlow

John Freeman (Bloxwich) heads one home against Ludlow.  Picture:  Stuart Williams

Report by Andrew Poole courtesy of Bloxwich Utd AFC

BLOXWICH United AFC went top of the table on Saturday (24 January) following a 4-0 victory over Ludlow Town.

The Red Lions grabbed an early lead when some good work on the left by Adam Simkiss ended with him picking out Craig Bannister with a defence-splitting through-ball and the leading scorer fired home with confidence.

Despite dominating the rest of the first half, Bloxwich were finding it hard to break through Ludlow’s stubborn rearguard which saw them defend in numbers.

The second half started in a similar vein as the home side missed a couple of chances before a double substitution saw new signing Mark Swann and Pete Bromley enter the action to good effect.

Some skilful play out wide by Swann saw him cross onto the head of John Freeman who made no mistake to double the advantage.

The third goal arrived on 75 minutes as Simkiss set-up Bannister once more and he swept the ball home.

Right at the death, it was 4-0 when Pete Bromley fired home from distance. “We were never in any real danger, but Ludlow frustrated us for long periods,” said player-manager, Michael Moseley. “In the end it took a double change to spark us into life.

“We’ve managed to bring in several new faces during the past week or so and the competition that this brings is a healthy thing to keep the rest of the lads on their toes.”

Story by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  21 Jan 09

BLOXWICH United came from two goals behind to beat local rivals, Pelsall Villa 4-2 despite never getting out of first gear.

Villa took an early lead when Lee Sherwood's free-kick took a wicked deflection on its way into the net.  They doubled their advantage in the seventh minute when Sherwood scored with another free-kick.

In high winds and driving rain, The Red Lions started to get into the game towards the end of the first half and Adam Simkiss did well on the left before putting in an inviting cross for Craig Bannister to pull a goal back on 41 minutes.

It was one-way traffic after the break with United well on top and it came as no surprise when Bannister levelled matters with around 20 minutes to go.
Another teasing cross by Simkiss picked out John Freeman who made no mistake to make it 3-2 before former Villa man, Bannister completed his hat-trick near the end.

There was still time for United to carve out a couple of further chances to increase their lead, but in the end the scoreline finished 4-2. "It was a scrappy game," admitted player-manager, Michael Moseley. "The conditions didn't help, but the main thing was that we picked up the three points.  "We were poor in the first half and whilst we never really got going in the second period, we were well on top and deservedly won."

Bloxwich Utd Festive Woe at Ellesmere

Story by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  21 Dec 08

BLOXWICH
United AFC slipped to a 2-1 pre-Christmas defeat at Ellesmere Rangers on 21 December.

The Red Lions made a sluggish start to the proceedings and were second best in the opening exchanges.  There was further woe on 20 minutes when in-form striker, Alan Wilkes was forced to limp out of the action.

After Gary Woodcock had made several smart saves, the home side finally made the breakthrough as they seized upon some poor marking to take the lead through Danny Barton's sweet strike.

United came out for the second period in brighter mood to carve out a couple of half-chances.  The equaliser came just past the hour-mark when John Freeman headed home from a corner kick.

Bloxwich
continued to dictate the pace, however the home went on to snatch what proved to be the winner against the run of play when Craig Farr managed to turn the ball home at the far post.

"We took too long to get into our stride and didn't have enough players who were willing to roll up their sleeves and battle to get something from the game," said player-manager, Michael Moseley.

The Red Lions have been drawn at home to current leaders, AFC Wulfrunians in the first round of the League Cup on Tuesday, January 13th.

The advantage was doubled on 37 minutes when Alan Wilkes received the ball with his back to goal before cutting inside and beating two players to curl home with a superb effort.

The Red Lions were well in command and after Craig Bannister struck the woodwork with a free-kick from just outside the area on the hour, another ball in from the left by Simkiss found the lively Wilkes who turned sharply to make it 3-0.

"It was a full-blooded encounter with the tackles flying in from both sides," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "We put in an excellent team performance and were solid all over the park.

Dateline:  17 November 2008

BLOXWICH United slipped to a rare home defeat with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Bromyard Town on Saturday.

Both Nick Smith and John Freeman went close before Craig Bannister opened the scoring for The Red Lions on 25 minutes.

That is how the scoreline stayed until early in the second period when Adam Overton equalised for the visitors.

With their tails up, Luke Towler gave Bromyard the lead before Freeman found the net from close range to bring the scores level.

There were 12 minutes remaining when Overton notched his second of the afternoon.

The Red Lions had the opportunity to grab a point near the end with a penalty that was missed by Darren Leonard.

"Poor defending cost us dear," observed player-manager, Michael Moseley. "It was another case of missed chances and I can't believe we've lost the game.

"We must make sure that we pick ourselves up and get ready for the next game."

Bloxwich Bounce Bustleholme!

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  13 November 2008

FREE-scoring Bloxwich United hit Bustleholme for six with a convincing 6-0 away win on Wednesday.

The Red Lions went ahead on two minutes as Daniel Battison fed Craig Bannister who was alert to force the ball home from close range.

After Bannister was denied by a good save shortly afterwards, an inviting corner from Adam Simkiss saw Darren Leonard make his presence felt as John Freeman fired home.

Gary Woodcock saved well to deny the home side on 20 minutes, whilst at the other end, Leonard saw an effort deflected wide.  The third goal arrived on 28 minutes when the home ‘keeper failed to hold on to a powerful strike and Freeman was live to the rebound for his second goal of the evening.

Within minutes it was 4-0 as Simkiss found the net with a fine strike from the left that flew home.

The second period was 11 minutes old when a long ball found Freeman who slotted home to complete his hat-trick before Battison, back in the side after suspension, put a low drive wide in the next attack.

Bustleholme were reduced to ten men following a dangerous tackle from behind, but went on to strike the base of the post as they looked to pull a goal back.

An excellent ball from Freeman set substitute, Alan Wilkes racing away before drawing a smart save from the ‘keeper, who was powerless to keep out a Bannister corner on the 70-minute mark that crept into the net.

With time running out, Carl Morris twisted and turned only to be denied by the ‘keeper as The Red Lions secured a deserved victory on a chilly night. “We knew that we had to approach this game in the right frame of mind,” said player-manager, Michael Moseley. “When we passed the ball, there was no stopping us and we scored some good goals.”

Bloxwich give Wellington the boot!

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  12 October 2008

BLOXWICH United continued to march on with an excellent 5-1 victory at Wellington.

The Red Lions were slow coming out of the blocks and found themselves a goal down within 15 minutes.

They were back on level terms before the break when some good work by John Freeman saw him carve out a chance for Craig Bannister who made no mistake as he found the top corner of the net.

Bloxwich were dominant after the restart and the lively Freeman made it 2-1 on 50 minutes. The third goal soon arrived as an inviting cross from substitute, Darren Leonard picked out Bannister who volleyed home with real panache.

The fourth came after Richard Bakewell played in Leonard and he stayed cool to slot the ball past the advancing ‘keeper.

The scoring was complete when the on-loan Jarrad Stevens showed great skill to beat three players before firing home as Michael Moseley’s men picked up another good three points. "Like the previous game, I thought that we were sloppy early on," said Moseley. "We managed to get back on level terms before the break and during half-time we had a few words which appeared to have the desired effect as we came out and totally dominated the second period.

"We scored some excellent goals and everyone played their part in what turned out to be an important win for us. We will now take this extra confidence into Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash with Darlaston Town, which we are all looking forward to with real relish."

Saturday’s local derby with Darlaston Town at The Old Red Lion Ground, Somerfield Road sees second take on third and has all the ingredients to be a cracker. Don’t miss it, kick-off is 3.00pm and admission is just £3.50 (adults) and £1.50 (juniors).

Freeman at the double for Bloxwich

Dateline:  12 October 2008
Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

BLOXWICH United came from behind to beat Gornal Athletic by three goals to one at The Old Red Lion Ground on Saturday.

It was the visitors who made the brighter start and took the lead just past the quarter-hour mark through Geoff Hill.

The goal was the wake-up call that The Red Lions needed and some good play on the right by Nick Smith ended with him crossing onto the head of John Freeman who levelled the scores.

Bloxwich got their noses in front on the stroke of half-time when some slick build-up play ended with a free-kick in a dangerous position that Craig Bannister delivered invitingly into the danger zone and Freeman was on hand to head home his second of the afternoon.

The second period saw Bloxwich dominate for long periods and Bannister, who became the clubs first-ever contracted player this week, completed the scoring with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

"We made a sluggish start," admitted player-manager, Michael Moseley. "It took us falling a goal behind to bring us to life and when we did, there was just no stopping us.

"I was impressed with some of the football that we played and it was also an added bonus to introduce new-boys, Darren Leonard, Christian Darby and youngster, Jay Davies into the action to good effect in the second half."

RED LIONS POOR AT PELSALL

Dateline:  6 October 2008
Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

The Red Lions went down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at local rivals, Pelsall Villa on Saturday.

The tone was set when former Pelsall man, Craig Bannister was red-carded early on as powerful strikes by Tom Baggott and John Vickers won the day for the home side.

"It was a very poor performance," admitted player-manager, Michael Moseley. "We were second best for most of the afternoon and got exactly what we deserved out of the game - nothing.

"The players know that they fell way below the standards that we have set ourselves so far and the test now is how they respond to this set-back.

"We have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and start on another positive run of results."

Seventh Heaven for Red Lions

Two-goal hero John Freeman (in red).

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  28 September 2008

Bloxwich United AFC were in seventh heaven following a comprehensive 7-1 victory at Ludlow Town last Saturday.

The Red Lions took the lead in the 13th minute when Carl Morris did well to carve out an opening for John Freeman who made no mistake.

A foul on Adam Simkiss gave Bloxwich a penalty which Pete Clarke stepped up to confidently fire home before Craig Bannister made it 3-0 as he lifted the ball over the advancing 'keeper.

It was 4-0 going into the interval as Bannister added his second of what was a bright and sunny afternoon.

The second period began in much the same vein as the first half had ended with Bloxwich well in control and it didn't take Freeman long to add a fifth goal with a powerful drive.

With 63 minutes on the clock, Bannister weighed in with a sixth goal, but the hosts were able to claw a goal back through Dale Williams.

The scoring was complete when Alan Wilkes came off the bench to fire home a screamer following a cleverly-worked corner kick on the left.
"The lads worked extremely hard and deserved to win so convincingly," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "In hot conditions, everyone did their job and it was an impressive performance from start to finish.

"There is healthy competition in the squad and the lads in the team at the moment are doing all that they can to stay there."

The Red Lions take on local rivals, Pelsall Villa at The Bush on Saturday (kick-off 3.00pm).

Bloxwich battle Ellesmere

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  24 September 2008

Bloxwich United had to work hard to secure three points against a battling Ellesmere Rangers side at The Old Red Lion Ground on Tuesday evening.

The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and after having an early penalty appeal turned down, they proceeded to see a header fly just over before 'Bloxwich 'keeper, Lee Holliday made a crucial block shortly afterwards.

As The Red Lions got into their stride, Craig Bannister had a tame effort saved following good buld-up play involving Adam Simkiss and Alan Wilkes.

Then a break by Bannister ended with Ellesmere getting men back to cover as he waited for support as the half ended goalless.

There were a couple of half-chances for Wilkes and Bannister at the start of the second period before Bloxwich took the lead just before the hour-mark as Nick Smith headed home an inviting cross from Adam Simkiss on the left.

The visiting 'keeper did well to deny Wilkes before expertly pushing a Bannister free-kick over. He then blocked from Carl Morris who managed to unlock the Ellesmere defence only to hesitate at the crucial moment.

With Bloxwich on top, the second goal duly arrived as Jamie Simkiss fed Bannister who expertly found the net from distance to complete the scoring. "Ellesmere made it extremely tough for us in the first half," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "We were a better side after the break and managed to grind out the points.

"I was pleased to see us keep another clean sheet and score two very good goals."

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  19 September 2008

The Red Lions ran out worthy 4-0 winners at Lye Town on Wednesday evening.

Alan Wilkes fired an early warning shot when he rode a couple of challenges before cutting inside and firing inches wide.

Bloxwich eventually took the lead on the quarter-hour mark when Adam Simkiss delivered a ball onto the head of Peter Smith who put the ball across the face of goal for Craig Bannister to find the net.

Some brave defending by Jon Walker saw him keep the home side at bay shortly afterwards, whilst at the other end, a stray back-header was picked up by Bannister who smashed a shot against the crossbar.

The second goal wasn't too far away as Wilkes expertly fired into the far corner.

With The Red Lions well on top, Simkiss fed Wilkes whose ball into the danger zone was headed just wide by Bannister.

The second period began with Lye Town looking to get themselves back into the game, however a long ball caught out the home side as Bannister twisted and turned to fire home and make it 3-0.

Some more brave defending at the far post denied the home side once more and from the resulting corner, they headed narrowly over.

A neat ball from Wilkes set striker partner, Bannister racing away on 75 minutes but his lob was just off target as he spotted the 'keeper straying off his line.

The scoring was complete late on when Bannister was fouled on the edge of the area and stepped up to convert the free-kick low past the despairing dive of the 'keeper.

"It was a super team performance," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "Not many teams will come here this season and win so convincingly."

HONOURS EVEN FOR BLOXWICH V SHAWBURY

New Bloxwich United team member Adam Simkiss (in red) takes flight!

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC

Dateline:  15 September 2008

Bloxwich United AFC had to settle for a share of the spoils in a goalless draw with Shawbury United last Saturday.

On a sunny afternoon at The Old Red Lion Ground, Alan Wilkes was guilty of missing two good chances in the opening period for the home side.

With chances at either end distinctly few and far between as the game went on, Bloxwich skipper, Mitchell Tolley had an opportunity that he put wide in the second half. “It wasn’t a great game,” conceded player-manager, Michael Moseley, who made his first appearance of the season as a second half substitute. “We had a number of key players missing and it had an effect on us.

“That said, we created what few chances there were and with a bit more composure in front of goal could have easily won the game.

“Whilst we didn’t perform to the levels that I expect, on a positive note we managed to keep a clean sheet and add another point to our total.”

Dateline:  1 September 2008

Bloxwich United AFC chalked up another entertaining victory with a 4-2 success over Heath Town Rangers.

The Red Lions opened the scoring within the opening couple of minutes when some good work on the left by the on-loan Simon Forsdick saw him set up Jamie Simkiss who hit the post and Craig Bannister was alert to convert the rebound.

The advantage was doubled on 11 minutes when Alan Wilkes found the net with a sweet left-footed volley that gave the ‘keeper no chance.

Heath Town were given a route back into the game just before the interval when they were awarded a penalty which Paul Harris despatched.

Early in the second period a foul on John Freeman went unpunished and as Bloxwich stopped, the visitors were able to break through and get back on level terms.

This spurred the home side back into life and with 73 minutes on the clock, Wilkes tucked away his second of the afternoon. He then completed his hat-trick with around five minutes to go with another neat finish.

“We started extremely well,” said player-manager, Michael Moseley. “We looked well in control but were then guilty of taking our foot off the gas and this allowed our visitors to claw themselves back into the game.

“It was a case of when we needed to step up the pace, we did and this allowed us to go on and claim three more valuable points.

“There are some tough matches coming up in September but if we keep at it and build on what we have done so far, we will be okay.”

Bloxwich United were amongst the goals once more as they ran out 5-1 winners against Goodrich last night (Tuesday).

Alan Wilkes opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a sweetly-struck free-kick.

There were loud appeals for a penalty six minutes later as John Freeman was felled, but Bloxwich kept the attack alive and Craig Bannister slotted home for 2-0.

The third goal arrived on 24 minutes when Mitchell Tolley cut the visiting defence open and Bannister calmly applied the finish.

After The Red Lions failed to clear their lines, Goodrich were able to pull a goal back just before the half-hour mark.

Just before half-time, Freeman showed excellent strength to pick out Tolley who volleyed home.

The second period began with Wilkes striking the post from the edge of the area before he drilled the ball into the danger zone in the next attack and Freeman was on hand to divert the ball home from close range.

Goodrich never gave up and kept Bloxwich on their toes for the remainder of the game as we secured another vital three points. "It was another good display," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "Despite the scoreline, we were made to work hard, but it was an excellent team performance with everyone doing their job.

"The back four gave us a solid base to build from, whilst I must give credit to John Quilt and Jason Moseley who have got the lads' fitness levels up to a superb standard.

"It's another three points and we will keep plugging away."

Bloxwich United recorded their first away win with a convincing 4-0 victory at Wolverhampton Casuals on Saturday

The Red Lions took the lead in the 25th minute when Craig Bannister fired home.

Bannister then missed from the penalty spot five minutes later before Richard Joyce doubled the advantage with half-time approaching as he found the net with a sweet volley.

Bloxwich were rarely in danger as they defended resolutely and Bannister made it 3-0 from 25 yards with just over 20 minutes to go.

As the clock ticked down, Nick Smith got his name on the scoresheet as he scored, with the aid of a wicked bounce, from a free-kick.

"We played well, but took our foot off the gas somewhat in the second half," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "That said, the scoreline was never in any real danger.
"It's a case of taking every game as it comes; we have two home games coming up and have a chance to really push on from here."

Bloxwich United draw in Darlo Town

Photo and report courtesy Bloxwich United AFC
Report by Andrew Poole

Dateline:  20 August 2008

Bloxwich United's first away encounter of the season ended in a goalless draw last night against a Darlaston Town side who had won each of their opening three games.

Playing up the slope in the first half, The Red Lions were made to work hard in the opening exchanges.

With 28 minutes on the clock, Craig Bannister found the net with a sweetly-struck free-kick that was ruled out for offside.

In what was developing into a high-tempo encounter, Bloxwich United started to get a hold of proceedings as the half wore on and Nick Smith went close after Bannister linked up well with Alan Wilkes.

In the closing stages of the opening period the home side had a couple of decent chances of their own but Lee Holliday kept them at bay.

With player-coach, John Quilt introduced into the action at half-time against his former club, he soon made his presence felt to set up Bannister
who dragged his effort wide.

It was Bloxwich who were asking all of the questions, however Holliday had to be alert to save well from Wayne Lawley before the next home attack ended with them striking the base of the post.

A dipping effort from Smith landed just over as United rallied near the end in search of a winning goal but it just wasn't to be as Bannister, Wilkes
and Quilt all went close.

"It was another good performance," said player-manager, Michael Moseley.  "Credit to both teams because the game was played at a fantastic tempo.

"Darlaston will be happier with the point because we put them under pressure for long periods and had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside.

"If my lads continue to show that sort of commitment and endeavour I will be delighted and we will find ourselves challenging at the right end of the
table.

"We came up against what was a strong side at this level who had won three out of three going into the game and made them look second best."

The Red Lions travel to Wolverhampton Casuals on Saturday (kick-off 3.00pm).

NEXT WEEK'S MATCHES

Report by Andrew Poole

Dateline:  16 August 2008

Bloxwich United AFC claimed their first win of the season in emphatic style with an 8-0 victory over Bustleholme on Saturday.

John Freeman fired home to open the scoring on the 20-minute mark before a penalty from Alan Wilkes doubled the lead three minutes later.

Another spot-kick two minutes later was this time converted by Craig Bannister, who then made it 4-0 going into the interval.

The Red Lions continued to dominate proceedings in the second half as Bannister bagged another two goals to take his personal tally to four.

Freeman then notched his second of the afternoon before Aaran Archer came off the bench to complete the scoring near the end.

"Having put in a poor performance in our previous game, the lads responded superbly well," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "We were right at it from the first whistle and didn't take our foot off the gas.

"Everyone did their job and this victory will give us a massive confidence boost."

The Red Lions travel to a Darlaston Town side who have a 100% record after three games on Tuesday evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

We urge as many of you as possible to come along and give us your support...

Bloxwich Defeated at Old Red Lion Ground

Dateline:  9 August 2008

BLOXWICH United's first game in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division ended in disappointment as visitors, Tividale went home with a 2-1 success.

After a goalless first half, it was Tividale who edged in front five minutes after the restart through Chris Smith.

The Red Lions got back on level terms as Alan Wilkes found the net with 65 minutes on the clock, but a lapse of concentration within a minute led to the visitors regaining the lead as Martin Allard got his name on the scoresheet.

Bloxwich's misery was complete soon afterwards when defender, Joey Bent saw red.

"It was a bad day at the office," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "Every single one of the lads fell way short of the standards that we had set ourselves during pre-season.

"It was a poor performance and something that I am not prepared to accept. The lads will be made aware of this in no uncertain terms during training on Tuesday evening.

"The one plus point of the day was that we had an excellent crowd and I would like to thank those who turned up and urge them to come back on Saturday when we play host to Bustleholme."

Football Comes Home to Bloxwich!

The new team

Datelin:  11 July 2008

Report by Andrew Poole, courtesy Bloxwich United AFC.  Pictures by Stuart Williams.

The new Bloxwich United AFC football club made its formal debut on 11 July, bringing football back to Bloxwich in style.

On an historic evening at The Old Red Lion Ground, Somerfield Road, Bloxwich United AFC’s first-ever game ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of a Walsall FC XI.

Both sides displayed outstanding commitment and passed the ball around well, which pleased the 300-strong crowd.

It was the home side who created the better chances, with Jamie Simkiss and Mitchell Tolley both hitting the post in quick succession during the second half, before Saddlers‘ substitute, Sean Geddes fired home a late winner.

“I‘m over the moon with the lads,” said Bloxwich United manager, Michael Moseley at the final whistle. “They gave me everything and I couldn‘t be more proud of them.

“The new lads slotted in really well; Craig Bannister and Aaran Archer were lively up front, Carl Morris and Jamie Vaughan put in outstanding displays and Daniel Battison was in commanding form.

“I thought that defensively we were solid and all in all it was an excellent team performance. We have set the standard now and the future appears to be extremely bright.”

Walsall FC’s Youth Liaison Officer, Bill Jones, himself a former Bloxwich Strollers player, added: “Considering that both teams were playing their first game of the pre-season programme, it was a good, energetic match, played in the right spirit.

“We tended to tire a little towards the end as we‘ve only been back in training for a couple of weeks, but we packed the midfield and came through what was a good first test for us.

“We were impressed by Bloxwich United and wish them every success in the season ahead.”

BLOXWICH UNITED AFC: Holliday, Tolley, Welsh, Bent, Clarke, Simkiss, Morris, Battison, Bannister, Archer, Vaughan. Subs: J. Moseley, Lindop, Freeman, Marriott, Arnold, Wall, Joyce
