Bloxwich United breezed to the top of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division table last night, thanks to an unforgiving first half display against previously unbeaten Ellesmere Rangers.

United were at it right from the off and Craig Bannister was denied at close range by the visiting 'keeper early on.

The opening goal duly arrived on 16 minutes when John Freeman was fouled inside the area and Nick Smith stepped up to fire the resulting penalty home.

After Smith dipped an effort from distance just over, the lead was doubled with 24 minutes on the clock as an excellent long ball from Adam Simkiss set Bannister racing through and he expertly lifted the ball over the 'keeper.

Ellesmere had no answer to the home side and Leon Taylor should have added to the scoring but fired wide from close range.

It wasn't long before the third goal did arrive as another long ball caused problems as Richard Joyce powered his way through before lobbing home with aplomb.

Some good running by Freeman saw him feed Bannister who went close before a rare foray forward by the visitors ended with John Walker defending well.

It was Ellesmere who came out of the blocks with more purpose in the second period but The Red Lions defended resolutely and when they were beaten, Danny Barton put a chance wide.

In the end, Bloxwich ran out worthy winners. "We were totally dominant in the first half," said manager, Michael Moseley. "We had to show a different side to our game after the break, but I was delighted with the energy throughout the team.

"This was an excellent three points and a nice way to go top of the table."
