Council starts facelift for Walsall parks

Walsall Council is making the borough’s parks more attractive and welcoming for visitors with a £35,000 facelift – following suggestions for improvement from residents who use the open spaces.

The project will enhance entrances to Walsall Arboretum, Holland Park, Blackwood Park, King George V Playing Fields, Leamore Park, Reedswood Park, Willenhall Memorial Park, George Rose Park, Pleck Park and Palfrey Park.

Workers will repair fencing, gates, walls and buildings as well as painting fences, improving signage and removing graffiti.

Horticultural works will also be undertaken where necessary to improve visibility into and around park entrances.

Councillor Louise Harrison, cabinet member for leisure, said: “Walsall Council is proud of the improvements we are making to our green spaces and we want Walsall people to be take pride in them too.

“The aim of the work is to ensure Walsall’s green space sites are welcoming and attractive to visitors. We have been listening to what the public want. This will help make the parks more attractive to local people and visitors to the area alike”.

To complement the works currently being carried out, several sites will also receive new signage. The work is due to be carried out during September.

The council’s Greenspace Services team has been working with colleagues and partners across the borough to ensure citizens really have leisure spaces to be proud of.

Staff are also clearing pathways at countryside sites to improve accessibility and encourage greater visitor numbers. Across the borough the council is cracking down on fly tipping in green spaces, whilst encouraging dog owners to clean up after their pets.
