Walsall’s Mayor Councillor John O’Hare invited people to join him at Bloxwich War Memorial at 11am today to remember the servicemen and women who have lost their lives during the wars.

The Mayor spoke to a small gathering of local primary school children, members of the public, Bloxwich Councillors Kath Philips and Melvin Pitt, Bloxwich Police, Reg and Stuart Maxwell of the Bloxwich and Walsall branches of the Royal British Legion and other members, and the Normandy Veterans Association before joining them in two minutes respectful silence led by Legion representative Carol Fletcher.

The Mayor said: “In the hustle and bustle of busy modern life it is important that we all stop and reflect on the courage and dignity of these brave soldiers and honour those who are currently involved in conflicts.”

Despite the cold weather and the surrounding hustle and bustle of traffic, everyone felt that it was important to mark the anniversary of the first Armistice Day, when the guns of the Great War fell silent, and it was a quiet, peaceful and moving commemoration for all who were able to attend.                 Silence: The Mayor, Carol Fletcher, Reg Maxwell, Stuart Maxwell
